This is a follow up notes on 2 education related articles - Education and Freedom, and Education should be free.

We look at some of the course, current effect, and a possible solution (home schooling) to the issue of high education fees that doesn't guarantee success.

Below is a posting by John Lim, related to the PTPTN abolish issue in Malaysia:

Many cannot understand why PTPTN shall be abolished or limited to students who study at public universities.

To explain in a simpler way, let's study the insurance company + private hospitals case. By working together, insurance company will increase the premium annually while private hospitals raising their medical fee in an unacceptable rate, letting the stakeholders taking huge profit, at the expense of consumers of course.

Take a look back at PTPTN + Private Colleges model. In recent years, the tuition fees and intake of under-qualified students for private colleges have increased multi-fold due to easy financing by PTPTN, helping private colleges making huge profit at the expense of poor students. At the end, poor students suffer by having to pay huge loan after their study, and because most of them are under-qualifed, they won't be able to secure a high paying job after their study. ~ John Lim

As what pointed out by Hishammudin Rais, "But what the government did – which was very bad – was burden young people with debts. The moment you enter campus, you are in ... I was so shocked! RM40,000, RM60,000 debt. Come on! You are only 22 and you have a RM40,000 debt? Gila! So they tie you up, you know?"

As a consequences of high education fees, students either go to street for demonstration or sell themselves off in exchange for money to continue their studies (be it part time or other monetary exchange arrangement), such as one of the social phenomenon as reported here:

Home Schooling - The Solution

Home Schooling - Higher Education (The Coursera Project)

Coursera.org is a social entrepreneurship company that partners with the top universities in the world to offer courses online for anyone to take, for free. They envision a future where the top universities are educating not only thousands of students, but millions, as their technology enables the best professors to teach tens or hundreds of thousands of students.
