Innovation economy, warts and all
It’s not enough to build a Cyberjaya and hope for a Malaysian Silicon Valley to emerge. Infrastructure is important but more crucial is culture – one that doesn’t just accommodate free speech, freedom of inquiry, civil liberties, strict adherence to rule of law and a clear separation of powers, but which encourages and celebrates such things.
Economic liberalisation without political liberalisation won’t lead to an innovation economy. To truly achieve an innovation economy, we need both economic and political liberalisation, despite the challenges such openness may present.
