Belgium thriving despite having no government
Belgium has been without a government for 260 days since the general election in last June as the parties from the Dutch-speaking north and French-speaking south remain split. The two parties have failed to compromise and co-operate to form a coalition government. Hence, Belgium holds the world record of having no government for such a long time...

Belgian’s more than eight months of political stasis raises an interesting issue: Is a federal government a necessity?
"After 249 days without a government, Belgians wonder why they need one," was the headline in the National Post on Feb 17. Time magazine’s punchier headline was: "Belgian Waffling: Who needs Government, Anyway?"
For most Belgians, despite the lack of a federal government, everything still works.
This is largely because responsibility for education, culture, sports, welfare as well as some economic and employment policies has devolved to Belgium’s regions and local communities.
Belgium’s political saga suggests an effective local and regional government has greater impact on voters’ well-being than a federal government.
